How this Works

Everyone at Drumming Fanatics is a seasoned player, whether that be as a part of a rock band, solo act, or orchestra. We bring our expertise and familiarity with drums to make instrument-specific recommendations and put together comprehensive care guides based on your needs. In general, here is how we approach each article we write:

  • First, we identify the most desired, top-rated, or new & noteworthy drum kits and then bring them into our own spaces to test them out for ourselves. We always purchase each instrument ourselves and never accept free or discounted items from manufacturers; this way our reviews are kept completely unbiased and fair.
  • Depending on the kit we are reviewing, we make sure that we play and test it out for an appropriate length of time; because instruments take a little while to get used to and break-in, we make sure our evaluation periods align with recommended instrument performance guidelines.
  • The person reviewing the instrument(s) has ample experience and will also write the article and make recommendations. If writers are ever unsure about particular product details, they make sure to consult the larger team of experts.
  • We make sure to update any changes to instrument & equipment models and answer community inquiries as they arise.

Currently, Brett writes for different websites to share his knowledge and skills about drums. Along with running his own Youtube channel where he posts tutorials, tips & tricks, and information about his own experience as a lifelong professional musician.

What Originally Piqued Your Interest in the Drums and Percussion in General?

I started playing drums when I was 3-years-old. I don’t remember too much about it back then, but my dad was an incredible Blues guitarist and music was always around in the family. I was quite good as a child, but I took drumming very seriously from the age of 13. That’s when I practiced intensely and got quite good at playing the instrument.

What do you Consider Your Biggest Musical Accomplishment to Date?

I’d say my biggest achievement is being able to build several income streams to make drumming my full-time job. Most of what I do is drum-related, and I don’t think many people are lucky enough to have that.

How do you Stay Motivated?

I’m always trying to get better at the drums. Even though I’ve been playing for over 20 years, there are always new things to learn. That motivates me!

Do you Play Any Other Instruments?

I play a bit of piano.

Who are Your Biggest Inspirations?

Cobus Potgieter was one of my first huge inspirations. He’s from the same country as me (South Africa) and we met a few times when I was younger. We speak regularly now about drums and life. My more current inspirations would be Yussef Dayes, Nate Smith, and Dan Mayo.

What is Your Favorite Genre of Music and Favorite Artist?

I love fusion jazz. My favorite band is Snarky Puppy.

What is Your Earliest Memory of the Drums?

A drummer who plays in my dad’s band used to teach me a few things as a toddler. I remember those times fondly!

What is Your #1 Piece of Advice for People Looking to Pick up the Drums?

Find a good drumming teacher that can give you a path to follow. There are so many things to learn on the drums that it can get quite overwhelming. A good teacher or course will set you straight and help you stick to the important things at the beginning.
